The deep dive

The four spotlight picks — plus Dün from the vault — aren't grouped by sound at all. They're nodes on two family trees, and in these two genres, family trees ARE the genre.

Zeuhl began when drummer Christian Vander formed Magma in Paris in 1969 with a science-fiction myth: the planet Kobaïa, humanity's exodus to it, and its people's language. Vander composed in that invented tongue — the genre's very name, 'zeuhl,' is a Kobaïan word. The music hits like opera run through a jazz rhythm section: massed choral voices chanting over relentless, repeating bass figures, equal parts Ellington, Bartók and sheer volume. Nobody 'sounds like' zeuhl by accident; you are zeuhl by taking up Vander's language.

Canterbury started more casually — a group of teenagers in Kent called the Wilde Flowers who splintered into Soft Machine (jazz abstraction, wild improvising) and Caravan (pastoral, whimsical song-forms). When the first wave burned out, the same players regrouped: Matching Mole from Soft Machine's ashes, then Hatfield & The North, then National Health — formed when Hatfield's guitarist Phil Miller and drummer Pip Pyle joined forces with Gilgamesh's keyboardist Alan Gowen. The music got more compositionally ambitious with each relay hand-off.

The two lines crossed early — Soft Machine and Magma shared stages on the early-70s European circuit, and each bent the other. What unites them for this edition is the membership rule: in both, a band belongs because its members descended from the source. Fifty-plus years and three continents later, both trees are still sprouting.

The two trees knew each other — Magma and Soft Machine toured the same early-70s European circuit and traded influence. Fifty-plus years and three continents later, both lineages are still growing. That's what this edition listens for: not a sound, but a line of descent.
