A weekly crate of new prog, fusion and the fringes, dug out of the week’s music writing.
Fifth edition: the week's harvest from Prog Rock Journal, Louder's Tracks Of The Week, The Progressive Subway, A Closer Listen, The Free Jazz Collective and more, with a spotlight on Latin America's active prog network. — ed.
What Latin America is pressing right now: tango-fusion, psych-prog and modern composition across the southern cone and Mexico.
This is not a claim that Latin America has one progressive sound. It is a claim about infrastructure: small labels, independent rooms, and musicians who treat prog as a living vocabulary rather than a museum style.
The records in this edition keep crossing borders—between rock and improvisation, local history and present-tense experiment, composition and noise—without needing to announce a common school. The shared thread is not a genre formula; it is the willingness to make difficult, specific music where a scene can actually hear itself.
Buenos Aires is the clearest hinge. Trigémino brings a 1976 lineage into a new recording, with Jorge Minissale and Juan “Pollo” Raffo reconnecting Argentine rock’s past to the present. On the same Viajero Inmovil orbit, Odisea Tango XXII turns bandoneon, synthesizer and jazz-fusion into something younger and stranger: players aged fifteen to twenty-four writing from the Conurbano Sur. The point is not nostalgia or succession. It is a scene where memory remains usable.
From there the map widens without becoming a checklist. Sistemas Inestables and Chercán show two Chilean angles—Santiago’s precise instrumental architecture and Valdivia’s sax-and-flute avant-prog. Teonanacatl carries a Mexico City ensemble into a Nahuatl title and a seven-piece arrangement. Papangu’s João Pessoa records Brazil’s northeastern inheritance onto analog tape, while Argentine saxophonist Camila Nebbia’s Berlin-based collaboration makes the diaspora part of the geography too. These are the pressure points that made this week’s playlist cohere.
Every artist above shipped a record or single within the last year; label and city trails come from the pinned reviews in this edition.
